TikTok enforces its own rules on how many messages you can send in a conversation, and how long you have to send them. This article explains what those limits mean, what the different statuses on the composer look like, and what to do when you hit one.
Why you sometimes can't reply
Above the composer on a TikTok conversation, you may see a small pill telling you that you can't send a message, or counting down how many replies you have left. This isn't a Trengo restriction — it's TikTok's own messaging policy, and it applies to every business account on the platform.
How the limits work
There are two things happening at once: a clock, and a message limit.
The clock. TikTok gives you 48 hours from the customer's most recent message. Every new message the customer sends restarts this 48-hour window.
The message limit inside that clock depends on whether the customer has replied to you yet:
- Before the customer has replied: you can send up to 10 messages. This resets whenever the clock resets.
- Once the customer has replied: there's no limit on how many messages you can send.
A "reply" specifically means a message the customer sends after you've responded to them. If the customer sends several messages before you've answered any of them, none of those count as a reply.
When the 48-hour clock runs out:
- If the customer had already replied at some point, you get 3 more messages to send before the conversation closes again.
- If the customer never replied, you get no extra messages — sending stops as soon as the clock runs out.
What you'll see on the composer
The pill above the composer will show one of four messages:

The last two use the same label. Clicking the pill shows which one you are in: either the 48 hours have run out, or the three follow-ups are spent. Either way the action is the same — wait for the customer to write again.
What to do when you're blocked
There is nothing you can do to reopen the conversation except wait for the customer to send a new message. Unlike WhatsApp, TikTok has no message template system and no fallback channel (like SMS) to switch to. Once a conversation is blocked, it stays blocked until the customer writes in.
Photos with text count as two messages
TikTok has no caption field on an image, so a photo sent together with text arrives as two separate messages and uses two of your allowance. The composer won't let an agent send both at once, but a journey, rule or AI agent still can — so on a conversation an automation has touched, the count can drop by two at a time.
A note on TikTok's own documentation
If you check TikTok's messaging limits documentation directly, be aware that their send message endpoint page only describes the 10-message limit and doesn't mention that the limit is lifted once the customer replies. That page only covers the period before a customer has answered — it isn't describing a different or conflicting rule.
